The Act for Supporting Entrepreneurs and their Internationalization allows for investors to be granted permanent residency status if they complete one of a choice of investments. Family members may accompany the investor to Spain. Permanent residency can be acquired after five years. Citizenship can be applied for after ten years of actual residency in Spain.

Requirements

Investors may make one of the following investments:
  • The investor can make an investment of €2,000,000 in Spanish Government bonds.
  • The investor can purchase at least €1,000,000 worth of shares in Spanish companies.
  • The investor can make a €1,000,000 deposit in a Spanish financial institution.
  • The investor can purchase at least €500,000 worth of Spanish property, mortgage free.
  • The investor can carry out a business investment deemed to be for the public good e.g. the investment is job creating, encourages innovation, makes a scientific or technological impact or makes a significant socioeconomic impact.

Naturalisation

Citizenship of Spain can be acquired by naturalization after ten consecutive years of residence in Spain. Applicants must be deemed well-integrated into Spanish society, and must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Applicants must be over 18 years of age.
  • Applicants must have a clear criminal record in Spain and must be financially stable.
  • Applicants must demonstrate their integration into Spanish society. This can be evidenced by Spanish language ability or taking part in cultural activities.

Spain is a member of the European Union. Citizens are free to live, work, study and do business in any EU member state and in Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Iceland. Spanish passport holders can also enjoy visa-free entry to 157 countries and territories, including Canada, the USA, New Zealand, Australia, India and Turkey. Descendants of the applicant will retain citizenship. Spouses may also apply for citizenship. Moreover, donations to the Government of Spain are not required.
